SEEK REFUGE FROM THE PUNISHMENT OF THE GRAVE
The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said:
“Seek Allah’s protection from the punishment of the grave, since the punishment of the grave is a fact.”
[Tabarani]
On another occasion, the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) admonished the Sahabah saying,
“Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of Hell.” They said, “We seek refuge with Allah from the torment of Hell.” He said, “Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave.” They said, “We seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave.” He warned, “Seek refuge with Allah from temptations both visible and invisible.” They replied, “We seek refuge with Allah from temptations (fitnah) in every visible and invisible form.” Then he added, “Seek refuge with Allah from the temptation of the Dajjal.” They said, “We seek refuge with Allah from the temptation of the Dajjal.”

The punishment of the grave is compensation for a person’s sins in the world. We should always seek refuge with Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) from the trial of the grave as the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) did.
Reciting Surat-ul-Mulk at night also protects from punishment of the grave, inshaAllah.
